The duo is set to release its third full-length effort, “TIME MACHINE 2013”, this August. The album, which takes place in the future, is a twenty-three track magnum opus of the duo’s experience with time travel, and harbors messages of what is in store for humanity. Indie director Jim Jarmusch lenses a low-tech tribute to protean rocker Neil Young and his long-standing band, Crazy Horse. Stitched together from archival material shot in 1976 and 1986 along with candid scenes of Young and the band kicking back between shows, Year of the Horse is as ragged as it is direct. Concert performances include renditions of hits such as "Sedan Delivery" and "Like a Hurricane."

Hard-rocking blues guitarist, vocalist, songwriter Tinsley Ellis sings and plays with the energy and soul of all the great Southern musicians who have come before him. Live, there's simply no one better at igniting a crowd, jamming with focus and purpose. Tinsley was a crowd favorite at the Wanee Festival 2008.

The Toler-Townsend Band is the musical venture of two icons of the Southern Blues-Rock genre - guitarist "Dangerous" Dan Toler, formerly of The Allman Brothers Band and Dickey Betts & Great Southern, and Johnny Townsend, the blockbuster voice of The Sanford/Townsend Band and their monster hit "Smoke from a Distant Fire".

Established Unknown is a band with many diverse influences. They explore a wide range of Blues and Folk, Latin Jazz, Reggae and improvisational forms, creating their own original style of music, dubbed 'PsycheTropic'. Pedro Arevalo, has been the bassist for Dickey Betts & Great Southern for many years.

Hailing from Kennesaw, Georgia, Lingo has been turning heads for over three years. With their infectious blend of songwriting and jam, they continue to blossom into one of the premier live acts in the region.

Tony Joe White
Friday, October 1, 2010

Adam Smith Productions Presents:

Tony Joe White

Concert @ 9:00 P.M./Doors @ 8:00 P.M.

Tickets: $13.00 Advance/$16.00 Door
$16 day of.

Revered as one of the originators of swamp rock, Tony Joe White has recast a number of his classic songs on Deep Cuts, definitively proving that time has no jurisdiction over funky. His groove, starting from his 1969 hit “Polk Salad Annie” through his 2006 star-studded album Uncovered, is built on valuing the roll as much as the rock, leaving the listener powerless to the imminent head bob. It is in this groove that Tony Joe paints a vivid picture of the world he experienced growing up, where poverty provided unity between otherwise divided races and bad-news women were sometimes too good to pass up.

The overall aesthetic of Deep Cuts is reminiscent of Tom Rothrock’s production on R.L. Burnside’s techno-infused blues album Come On In. Tony Joe cut the tracks with his son Jody providing a rich palette of beats and loops, utilizing both digital and live drums, strings, organs, and the unmistakable timbre of Tony Joe’s guitar. Tony Joe’s time-worn baritone is positively haunting, like a restless spirit conjured by the funk that was always the core of his music.

On the opening track “Set the Hook,” Tony Joe intones, “Turn it up” over a dense array of thudding beats and fuzzed out guitar. He hits the ground running, never looking back. With an ominous guitar introduction, “As the Crow Flies” entrances the listener with an unrelenting, straight-ahead pulse. Retrofitted with a burning urban blues groove, “Willie and Laura Mae Jones” delivers a heartfelt plea for a racial unity once enjoyed in destitute times. “Homemade Ice Cream” was a breezy, instrumental tribute to simpler times in 1973. The deep orchestration augmenting Tony Joe’s modern version places the distant era even further in the past. Similarly, “Soul Francisco,” a sly critique and appreciation of the hippie culture from his first record, becomes a darker, paranoid depiction of California life in the 1960s.

Like on the original albums, the storytelling on Deep Cuts further reveals the genius of Tony Joe White. “High Sherriff of Calhoun Parish” is a tale of an irresistible seduction, paired with the profound fear of a man on the run. The sentimental “Aspen, Colorado” captures the conflicting emotions of a homesick man’s search for peace of mind. “Roosevelt and Ira Lee” tells the story of a nighttime encounter with a deadly water moccasin in the tense quiet of the backwater through an eruption of distorted guitar and organ.

As a collective work, Deep Cuts portrays the complications of living on the cusp of impending danger — be it an encounter with a brutal country sheriff or a poisonous snake — through the eyes of a master songwriter who has seen and lived all of it. Deep Cuts not only updates a cache of classic songs for a contemporary audience, it reframes them, revisiting his timeless imagery in a new, modern context. In the 70’s, Tony Joe’s songs were good enough to be interpreted by Elvis and Dusty Springfield; with Deep Cuts, Tony Joe himself reveals that there is still plenty to be gleaned from his irresistible, timeless groove.

THE WHIGS:

“This Athens, GA trio burnishes the South’s recent rep as a cauldron of literate rock acts. Though their pop-dusted garage band approach is distinctive, there are echoes of Kings of Leon bite, My Morning Jacket experiments and Drive-By Truckers lyrical honesty. Singer/guitarist Parker Gispert explores angst and sexual guilt without getting wimpy or losing thrust.” (3 stars)

FUTUREBIRDS:

In Athens, Georgia, the future can look a lot like the past. Often not too many changes down that way and Futurebirds certainly don’t mind. Some folks think good music comes from making a whole bunch of sounds no one’s ever heard before. Some folks think that you can sit back and take her easy for a little while without trying too damn hard. Some folks think you can have a little of both. If you push yourself every once in awhile, you might wind up in the right place around the right friends and come up with something worth playing on the porch-swing over an ice-cold beer. That’s exactly Futurebirds’ situation. Surrounded by a sleepy-living music community—more earnest than you’ll find elsewhere—the band works to set things right where they belong. Provide people with an infectious melody and a refreshing song about things they understand and they’ll sing with you.
